TDP #002 – This American Life
This American Life. It’s like a big piece of cake delivered to me via iTunes every so often.
Rather than talk about the kinds of stories they have, I think a far more useful form of review is to give you my own emotional response to the program. And damn, do I love it.
It’s actually one of those things that gives me hope, when I’ve spent days wading through badly written articles and horrifyingly inadequate news, and listening to people splutter angrilly about topics they have no idea about… there is a little delivery to my computer, and my soul just relaxes and my brain fires up, and I know I’m in for Good Times.
A recent episode I really loved was about Nummi.

Very nice! I’ve been listening to TAL for over ten years. Since that was before podcasts, I used to put the episodes on one-hour cassette tapes, then I would loan my favorites out to friends. When I was first dating Rebecca I gave her Superpowers, Telephone, and the Cruelty of Children. I would loan different ones to different people and got them all hooked, inadvertently giving certain types of girls crushes on Ira Glass.
You were the one who put me onto it! :)
I’m gonna go back and get the episodes you just mentioned.
Was I? :) There are so many good ones. Also favorites: Kid’s Logic, My Experimental Phase, and 81 Words.
I am well hooked. Every Monday I’m furiously refreshing iTunes waiting for it to pop up.
btw – If you want similar ‘stories’ and journalism podcasts, try The Moth podcasts

they are fantastic
ha! somebody beat me to it!
I came to your site via Jason Viola’s site Herman the Manatee. I appreciate your drawings for their attentive flare and inventive immediacy. Awesome! As another visually oriented person, it’s a delight to see these different topic pages you work through.
Because you like This American Life, I want to introduce two other awesome programs, “Radiolab” and “The Moth”. Radiolab makes one-hour-long episodes that digs into fascinating topics like “Animal Minds” and “Laughter” and “Beyond Time”. They also have shorter podcasts sprinkled in between episodes. The Moth is ongoing live storytelling event that has hour-long radio program packed with spellbinding tales of people from all walks of life.
I invite you to check out them both ^-^
