Diary #018 – Atari / Pacman

Although I do attempt to keep these comics specifically about my memories, I actually find myself doing a lot of research throughout just to check for myself whether what I’m remembering was accurate or not.

I was wondering if the Pacman I played was from the Atari 2600, or the more sophisticated Atari 5200 version. When I heard that 2600 sound, the fond recognition I felt told me it was the one.

Apparently the game was such a crushing disappointment (being such a poor port of the arcade version), it received terrible reviews and was returned to stores in huge amounts. People blame this terrible Pacman in part for the Video Game Crash of 1983.

No wonder I remembered the lounge room Atari being an “older” version, though I now suspect they were both the same.
