Guest Strip – Jason Viola

A momentous occasion here at KinokoFry. We have our very first repeat offender!

The glorious Jason Viola did a guest strip for us way back in May of last year and it was fantastic. But he has outdone himself this time!  Dear god, Jason, I love this! Jason’s style seems perfectly suited to KinokoFry. And you can see a couple more of his goodies in the Fan art section too.

And I especially like that Jason’s strip to me, and my strip to him both feature grotequely obese versions of characters. We think alike. :)

Jason is the talent behind Herman the Manatee, and it has been a joy to watch the evolution of that strip from its beginnings. I sort of feel like Jason and I are webcomic buddies because we both started at similar times and we’re both so gosh darned cute. Also, Jason has a beautiful wife called Rebecca (but not me! Another one. I know).

Herman’s beginnings are intruiging because it starts off with such a simple concept – Herman the Manatee gets hit in the head with a boat. Every time. Every strip was a new take on that one idea and boy, do I love super specific concepts like that.  It makes it particularly interesting to watch the comic go beyond that and explore all sorts of trials for Herman – who is just fucking lovable.

D’aww!

Sometimes Herman is hilarious and sometimes it bweaks your widdle heart. Jason is an excellent writer and his linework is gorgeous, and getting better and better all the time. That man wields a brush these days – I tip my damn hat (yes, my DAMN HAT) to him. It’s like they were meant to be.

One of my very favourite things and probably the first thing to really endear me to the strip is the way Jason represents the swirling currents of water in simple black and white and so stylishly! It’s what Jason does so well, simple and stylish.

Also, you may have seen in a recent post that I was bragging about Jason’s recent work, “Sunward“. It’s a beautiful and very original story! See, that was a link back there. Clicky clicky!

Go and read about Herman’s small joys and large woes!

Thankyou, Jason Viola!

Reminder:

Now, with EVERY donation, big or small, you will receive the new 45-page PDF booklet, “My Sketchbook”

Holy christ, 45 pages!

It is literally one of my sketchbooks scanned and compiled into handy PDF format so you can all laugh at how awful my scribbles and sketches are, wonder at what the hell my incomprehensible notes are, see some comics in their raw format, and feel good about yourself because you will look at this and go, “Pff. I could do that”.

If you’d like to feel that good, all you gotta do is make a donation!

Not even a whole colony of ants’ acid would be enough to dissolve the princess’ boldness now…

Okay, I immediately thought of Princess Peach when the words “mushroom princess” came up. Pffft.
